Truths No One Tells You About Living Abroad – Series

We embarked on this adventure of moving abroad in 2013 and, since then, we traveled all around Central America, sold all of our stuff, and ended up moving to Puerto Rico. We are now heading to Europe in a few weeks and plan on spending part of the year in South America next year. We’ve become the GenX Gypsies and we love this new lifestyle!

But, as romantic as it all sounds, there are some hard truths about living abroad (as well as long-term traveling) that no one tells you in advance. Below is a series of articles in which we provided you some “not so popular” but practical lessons we learned during this adventure. All in a convenient summary. We will add to it as we write more on the subject, so stay tuned for more…

  1. Hello again Joanna

    Ok was thinking about mosquitoes…

Googled it and it came up that PR was like the top country that had the new Zika Virus?
@April 20 2016 Puerto Rico (474) confirmed local cases April 12, 2016 Dengue fever cases in Thailand (Bangkok highest %) near 15,000 12 deaths for 2016

We do have them here (we are in country area) and before we screened our home we had nets put over beds at night…

Now just a fan blowing on you at night is enough
And we have mosquitoe zappers that we kill a dozen before bed…

So is it the same there in Liquillo with mosquitoes?
Was hoping the trade winds would help keep them at bay like in Hawaii??

My home here I usually get 2-3 bites on daily basis…
In my home Hawaii mostly none…

    • Hi Jer,
We live on the beach and hardly have any mosquitoes. The Zika scare is a complete joke, it’s not any worse than the common cold and not nearly as bad as the flu but the media has hyped it up so much that people are actually afraid to come here.

In the last month, I think I’ve been bitten by a mosquito once. But I think it depends on where you live. Any area near standing water, is obviously going to have more mosquitoes, but the winds on the coast keep them away.
The thing that gets me here is sand fleas. There is something about my body chemistry that they love. Tim, they hardly even bite but I go outside without protection and they get me instantly.

Anyway, I wouldn’t worry about Zika if I were you, we don’t have any problems with it. Normal protection against mosquitoes is enough.

      • Thxs Joanne for the mosquitoe info…
